In the case of Crooks vs. the State of Louisiana, the district judge determined that Catahoula Lake is a river. He awarded the ownership of the 25,000-acre lake to the approximately 53 landowners who have land that fronts the lake. According to the National Society of Professional Surveyors, if the ruling allowed to stand, will destabilize land titles at the lake and throughout Louisiana.
